Course Intent

The flourishing infrastructure, housing & retail industry in India has emerged as one of the most dynamic and fast paced industrial sector with several big players entering the market. In India, the vast middle class and almost untapped retail industry are the key forces of attraction for global retail giants waiting to enter new markets. This attraction has stimulated the growth of the retail industry and is growing at a faster rate.

  • •An estimated US $500 billion will have been invested in India’s construction sector.
  • The construction industry accounts for approximately 11% of the GDP.
  • Housing Sector growing at an average of 34% annually.
  • The Indian retail industry is the fifth largest in the world.
  • At present, it contributes about 22% of the GDP today.
  • It generates 8%of the employment in the country.
  • Retail industry expected to grow 25 per cent annually, to be worth US$ 175- 200 billion by 2016.

All these developments have given spurt to the interior design industy to develop these constructed spaces. These spaces need to planned well if they are the residential areas. The planning of spaces is the first foundation of a good design students learn the skill of planning based on the various parameters of climatology, daylighting, building envelope etc.
The Interior Designer is the person responsible for designing a space where the house adjusts to the needs of the person and not the person adjusting to the house as we generally do. They are the creators of machines for living as rightly said by the designer who designed the city of Chandigarh ,Le Corbusier.
Another very important design sector is the commercial design sector ,which deals with the store and retail, visual merchandising presentation. The students are taught how a person's buying behaviour changes and what design layouts are needed to arouse the person for buying a product. The student prototypes the complete design area on the computer and gives more attention to develop a sustainable design.
The interior designer should possess great observation skills and eye for detail as this will lead him to design better and effectively. This is a very practical arena and at Dezyne E’cole the diploma programme is focussed mainly on the industry needs and then designed to train the students as per the industry. This Programme along with the university ‘s theoretical concepts equips the student more stronger for the Interior Design World.

Exit Profile

Interior designers need to be creative, imaginative and artistic. They also need to be discipline, organized and skilled business people. Combining aesthetic vision with practical skills and knowledge, interior designer work with clients to develop design solutions that are “aesthetically appealing, technically sophisticated and pragmatically satisfying “.

Area of design specialization

Designers work in a wide range of settings, both commercial and residential. Surveys indicate that a majority of designers practice at least part of the time in both the residential and commercial areas, although they tend to favor one or the other.

Because commercial designers must be knowledgeable about the clients’ business needs, most concentrate with design specialties, such as designing for the hospitality or health care industries. Some restrict themselves to particular subspecialties, for example, designing restaurants or residential kitchens and baths. A few work in highly specialized fields, like designing interiors for airplanes or yachts, or doing historic conversation or restoration.

Skills of success

As members of service profession, interior designers’ fortunes depend on their ability to satisfy clients. Thus, they must possess three important skills sets-artistic and technical skills, interpersonal skills and management skills:

  • Designers must know how to plan a space and how to render that plan visually, so that it can be conveyed to the client. They must also be knowledgeable about the materials and products that will be used to create and furnish the space, and about how texture, color, lighting and other factors combine and interact to give a space its “feel” or “look”. In addition, they must understand the structural requirements of their plans, the health and safety issues, building codes, and many other technical aspects.
  • Designers must be comfortable meeting and dealing with many kinds of people. They must communicate clearly and effectively, as well as be attentive listeners. Because they often must work collaboratively with architects, contractors, and other service providers, designers need to be both good team leaders and good team players. They must be willing to negotiate and mediate when necessary to resolve problems.
  • Designers must have excellent time and project management skills, since they frequently work on more than one project at a time, under demanding deadlines, while looking for new projects or clients. They must be able to develop themselves to clients, to create informative and persuasive proposals and presentations, and to maintain good client relationships.
